MINUTES

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

October 16, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Tim Clark, Aileen Colon, Vice President Terence Endersen, Charles Folks, John Forstrom, Marvin Jones, Larry Jordan, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller, President Mike Ruehle, and Treasurer Christopher Van Horn. Fifty-eight additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

President Mike Ruehle introduced the Executive Board members for the 2008-2009 year.

Secretary Jeff Miller reported the receipt of four new membership checks, putting our membership near 400. Our liability insurance agent has delivered an invoice for a $10 administrative fee; a motion was approved unanimously to pay the bill.

Treasurer Christopher Van Horn reported a balance of $4,545.71 in the association checking account.

There was no representative from the Long Beach Police Department, so no report was given. President Ruehle described the reports he has made to LBPD concerning trash pickers in the alleys.

Nancy Buchanan announced the publication of a new directory of Belmont Shore businesses. She announced the Second Street merchants Halloween Trick or Treat event on October 31 from 4 to 6 pm and the BSBA Christmas Parade December 6, with the theme "Winter Water Wonderland". They are seeking suggestions for the parade's grand marshal.

Mayor Bob Foster spoke about Measure I, the Long Beach Infrastructure Reinvestment Act, which will appear on the November 4 ballot. He explained the details of the proposal and how it addresses our city's long-term infrastructure needs. Following this he answered questions from members of the audience.

Jeanette Gavin, the designated residents' representative on the Parking Commission, reported the events of the October 16 commission meeting, which included a presentation about trash bins for recyclables, the "Gateway Signs" project to place identifying signs over Second Street with space for advertising banners, and a presentation about central parking meters. The usefulness and accuracy of the sign survey was called into question, and a "show of hands" indicated that only three of the people in attendance at this meeting had taken the survey.

Joe Toney of Councilmember DeLong's office announced the plan to repair two blocks of sidewalks, the next SEADIP presentation meeting October 23, and collection of "e-waste" on Saturday.

President Ruehle reminded the audience that residents can support the library by obtaining a library card.

President Ruehle also reported the results of the recent survey of BSRA members, in which more than eighty percent of people responding supported the application by Aroma di Roma for a beer and wine license. John Forstrom noted that the proposed list of license conditions prepared by BSRA was accepted by Aroma di Roma and endorsed by Councilmember DeLong.

President Ruehle reported the list of issues of concern developed by residents will be sent in a survey to be ranked in order of importance. He also reported the status of the BSRA's request to increase notification of zoning variance requests. The city committee met and recommended increasing the notice from 300 feet to at least 500 feet.

Luann Cadby complained about the conduct of the Executive Board election in September.

Jeanette Gavin complained about the September newsletter.

Marge Campbell complained about the conduct of the Executive Board election in September.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm.
